This is the second time I've played here and although I remember the challenging layout, I was very surprised with the excellent condition of the course. We tried making tee times at a few courses with no luck and we were trying to stay local (Boston/South Shore area) so one of us threw out Franklin Park. Nobody was really to excited about it but the price was right ($40) and it was conveniently located for everybody (Dorchester). We were able to book a foursome for a Saturday afternoon no problem. When we started playing we couldn't believe how good of shape it was in. This is another local Donald Ross design that gets a lot of play, so we were all expecting a step above Ponkapoag, but I can definitely say that all of the fairways and all of the greens were in great shape. Besides the condition of the course, it also has a great layout. From the famous rock blocking the right side of the second green to the doglegged par 5 18th, every hole presented its own challenge. This course could easily have 4 or 5 signature holes. It calls for you to hit a lot of shots off of the tee as well as strategically place your ball in the fairway. If you're looking for a challenging and affordable round of golf without all of fancy stuff then I would recommend this course for you. The rates on their website are from 2004 but I believe they're still around $40 for a non resident and $30 for a resident, which is also a nice little bonus since a resident for this course is considered any resident of Boston.
